1. Overview & Core Philosophy
ScrollBreak is built to foster mindful digital wellbeing and intentional habits. We believe that personal focus and digital privacy should never be compromised. The app functions locally on your device without user accounts, cloud databases or external servers. The only network calls it ever makes are for ads on the free plan, for Pro purchase verification, and for Google Firebase crash diagnostics and consent-gated product analytics — all described in detail below.
2. On-Device by Default, Three Named Exceptions
- No data brokers: we do not sell, rent, or transmit your usage habits, blocked-app list, or device data to any marketing network or data broker. Your usage history, protected-app list and challenge content never leave your device.
- Product analytics (Google Firebase Analytics) — free plan, consent-gated: used to understand which screens and features help people, and how the free plan's ads perform. It is switched on only when the advertising consent gate allows collection, and never for Pro. Event payloads contain no usage history, protected-app names, challenge content, moods or settings. Full detail in Section 10.
- Crash diagnostics (Google Firebase Crashlytics) — everyone: crash stack traces, device model/OS, app version and a few non-personal app-state keys (Pro or free, number of protected apps, block interval, ad flags, challenge preference). No usage history, no protected-app names, no account, no advertising profile. Full detail in Section 10.
- Advertising (Google AdMob), free plan only: the free plan shows one banner on the Challenges tab and an optional rewarded ad. Google receives ad-request data such as your advertising ID, IP address and device information — never your usage data. Full detail in Section 9.
- Billing processors only: if you buy ScrollBreak Pro, Google Play processes the payment and RevenueCat verifies the purchase (Section 8).
- No cloud sync: your usage records, challenge completions, and configuration stay inside your device's sandboxed storage.
3. Android System Permissions & Purpose
Purpose: used exclusively to detect foreground window and application changes. When you open an app you selected for friction, ScrollBreak detects the event and presents a mindful pause challenge (coloring canvas or cognitive puzzle).
Your consent: before Android Accessibility Settings are ever opened, the app shows an in-app disclosure dialog explaining this use. Tapping "I understand — Continue" records your consent on-device and opens system Settings; tapping "Decline", going back, or dismissing records nothing and changes nothing.
Privacy guarantee: ScrollBreak does NOT read personal messages, capture keystrokes, inspect screen content, access passwords, track user input, or transmit any accessibility data off your device.
Purpose: query Android's local UsageStatsManager to compute minutes spent inside selected apps and mindful usage-free durations.
Privacy guarantee: all durations and timestamps are computed strictly on-device and are never uploaded or synced.
Purpose: display the mindful challenge screen over a restricted application when launched.
Privacy guarantee: used only to render the challenge UI; it does not monitor or capture content underneath.
Purpose: list your launchable applications so you can choose what to monitor. No broad package-visibility permission is requested.
Privacy guarantee: your installed app inventory is never stored externally, profiled, or shared.
Purpose: prevent OEM battery managers from terminating background detection during active sessions. No data use.
Purpose: (a) user-directed app updates and update checks, (b) an optional public-holiday lookup that sends only a country code and year to keep festival spotlight dates accurate — cached for 7 days, with silent fallback to built-in dates on any failure, (c) Google Play billing and RevenueCat verification if you buy Pro, and (d) Google Firebase crash diagnostics plus consent-gated product analytics on the free plan (never on Pro).
Privacy guarantee: never used to transmit your usage history, protected-app list, challenge content or profiles. No personal data is sent to the holiday service.
Note: ScrollBreak 1.1.0 does not run a foreground service. Background detection uses the AccessibilityService only, with no persistent notification and no remote monitoring.
4. What Data Is Stored Locally
- Monitored app identifiers: package names of apps you choose to monitor.
- Block interval settings: your chosen timeout intervals (e.g. 5 min, 15 min).
- Challenge progress: selected challenge types and difficulty levels.
- Local timestamps: last solve and last usage, used to compute session intervals.
- Accessibility disclosure consent: whether you accepted the current disclosure text, and when, so the app only opens system Accessibility Settings after explicit consent.
- Pro status cache: whether Pro is currently active and when it was last verified — used only to enforce the 2-app free limit while offline.
5. User Control & Data Deletion
- Revoke permissions anytime: Android Settings > Apps > ScrollBreak.
- Clear everything: Android Settings > Apps > ScrollBreak > Storage > Clear Storage, or uninstall. All local DataStore records are permanently erased.
- No server copy: there is no account to close and no server-side profile to delete. Purchase records held by Google Play and RevenueCat are deleted through their respective account flows.
6. Children's Privacy
ScrollBreak is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU); the target audience is 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app has no chat and no user-generated content. The free plan's ads are requested as general-audience ads with a maximum ad content rating of G, and the app is not tagged as child-directed. If you believe a child has used the app, uninstalling it erases every record stored on the device.
7. Policy Updates
If we update this Privacy Policy to reflect new device capabilities, new billing or advertising integrations, or regulatory requirements, the change is published here with a new effective date and version, and summarised in the Play release notes.
8. Subscriptions, Billing & Purchase Data
ScrollBreak is free to use for up to 2 monitored apps. ScrollBreak Pro (Monthly, Yearly, Lifetime, or Founders Lifetime) unlocks unlimited monitored apps. This section applies only if you purchase Pro.
- Merchant of record: all payments are processed by Google Play. Your card, UPI, or other payment credentials are handled exclusively by Google under the Google Play Terms of Service — they are never visible to us and never touch our systems.
- Purchase verification (RevenueCat): to unlock Pro across reinstalls and keep subscription status accurate, the app sends purchase data to RevenueCat, our subscription-management processor. RevenueCat processes a pseudonymous app user ID, device identifiers, and purchase history (products purchased, subscription status, renewal dates) under the RevenueCat Privacy Policy (revenuecat.com/privacy). RevenueCat never receives your accessibility data, usage stats, or blocked-app lists.
- What we store locally: only a cached Pro active/inactive flag and the time it was last checked, inside on-device DataStore. Clearing storage or uninstalling erases it.
- Launch price, cancellation & refunds: there is no free trial. For eligible new customers, Google Play may apply a discounted launch price to the first billing period; the amount shown at checkout is the amount charged, and the standard price applies afterwards. All plans auto-renew until cancelled via Google Play > Payments & subscriptions. Refunds are governed solely by Google Play's refund policy. Uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Deletion: to erase purchase records held by Google or RevenueCat, use their respective account/deletion flows — we hold no server copy and cannot delete records we never stored.
9. Advertising (Google AdMob — free plan only)
The free plan protects up to 2 apps and is supported by exactly two ad surfaces:
- One banner, shown only on the Challenges tab.
- An optional rewarded ad, shown only if you tap "Watch a short ad instead" to unlock one extra protected app for 24 hours.
There are no interstitials, no app-open ads, no offerwall ads, and no ads on the dashboard, inside a challenge, during onboarding or the permission walkthrough, or in the upgrade screen.
Who serves the ads: Google AdMob (Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC). When the app requests an ad, Google may collect and process your device's advertising ID or other device identifiers, IP address, approximate location derived from that IP address, device and app information, and ad interaction events (impressions, clicks). Google uses this data to serve and measure ads and to prevent fraud. See Google's Privacy Policy (policies.google.com/privacy) and "How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services" (policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites).
Consent: where the law requires it (EEA, UK, Switzerland), Google's User Messaging Platform consent form is shown before any ad request is made, and no ad request is sent until consent is resolved. The app never requests ads when consent is unavailable.
ScrollBreak Pro removes ads entirely: on Pro, the ads SDK is never initialised and the app makes no ad requests at all.
What is never sent to Google: your accessibility events, the apps you protect, your usage history, your challenge history, or your settings. Ad requests contain none of that data.
10. Analytics & Crash Diagnostics (Google Firebase)
ScrollBreak uses two Google Firebase services. They act as processors on our behalf; Google's Privacy Policy (policies.google.com/privacy) and Firebase's data-processing terms apply.
Firebase Analytics — free plan only, after consent: used to understand which screens and features help people and how the free plan's ads perform, so we can improve both. Collection is disabled at app start. Where consent is required (EEA, UK, Switzerland) it is enabled only after you answer Google's consent form; declining keeps it off. You can withdraw at any time via Settings > Legal & Privacy > Ad privacy options, which also stops analytics. It is never enabled for ScrollBreak Pro.
What Analytics records: an app-instance identifier generated by Firebase (not your Google account and not your advertising ID), device and app metadata (model, OS version, app version, language, coarse region derived from IP), and a small set of product events: onboarding steps completed, paywall viewed (including the one-time onboarding offer), plan selected, purchase started/completed/pending/failed (tier name and an error code only), restore result, screens opened, rewarded-ad prompt shown/accepted, rewarded unlock granted, ad load failed (format and error code), challenge started/solved (challenge type, block or practice, solve time), plus Google's automatic ad-impression and revenue events from AdMob.
What Analytics never records: your usage history, the names of apps you protect, challenge content or drawings, moods, your settings, your email or any account identifier.
Firebase Crashlytics — everyone: used only to find and fix crashes and ANRs. A report may contain the crash stack trace, device model, OS version, app version, a Firebase installation identifier, and the non-personal app-state keys listed in Section 2. It is not used for advertising or profiling, and it never includes your usage history or protected-app names.
Retention: Analytics events and Crashlytics reports are retained by Google according to the retention settings of the Firebase project; we do not keep a separate copy.
Pro: Pro users make no analytics requests. Crash diagnostics remain on so a crash can be fixed for paying users too.
